10 Tips to keep your home safe at Christmas

by Antonio Torregrosa

During these Christmas periods, many of us tend to leave our home for several days to travel or just a few hours to attend celebrations or family gatherings. In any case, our house will be empty and unprotected like many in the neighborhood, so there will be a greater risk of intrusions as there will be less presence of people in the surroundings. To this we must add that the hours of daylight are the fewest in all year round and that the weather is not usually conducive to having people on the street, making it difficult for “undesirable visitors”. For all this, it is advisable to take certain precautions, some will require technological protection and security equipment and devices and others. , just take simple measures that have little or no cost.

  1. Although it may seem obvious, sometimes the rush to go out plays tricks on us, so we must make sure that doors and windows are tightly closed. Secondary patio doors or garage doors are usually the most likely to remain poorly closed, as are bathroom windows, pantries, etc.
  2. The lack of lights and noises typical of a home denote the lack of interior presence. We can have a device that turns the lights on and off randomly and activates radio or television sounds. We can also install timers in sockets that perform these functions of turning lights and appliances on and off on a scheduled basis.
  3. If you are going to be away for several days, ask someone you trust to empty your mailbox.
  4. Dogs, in addition to being great company, if we have to leave them at home, can be a very effective deterrent.
  5. There are video intercoms that can be answered from our smartphone wherever we are, this will allow us to answer calls from anyone, especially intruders who call with any excuse to check if someone is home.
  6. The electricity meter, if it does not show consumption, indicates that no one is home, so it is advisable to always leave any device that continues to consume electricity.
  7. Detectors for opening or breaking doors and windows. Every door or window is obviously a hole through which the evildoer can enter. Installing these devices is relatively simple and avoids these avenues of assault.
  8. Install video surveillance cameras that allow us to view the status of the rooms we want in our house at all times. Some of these can also record or take photos in case of intrusion.
  9.  Volumetric detectors and motion sensors. These types of devices are very practical and relatively economical and will detect, depending on the sensitivity that we consider appropriate to program, any presence of people who enter their perimeter of action. There are already detectors that discriminate against animals, so we can let our pets roam freely.
  10. Installing outdoor video surveillance cameras with an incursion warning in the programmed radius of action will give us the possibility of notifying the police, concierge or the corresponding security service. They will also warn of possible vandalism of our property.

Having a good security system that is as complete and sophisticated as possible is the best way to ensure at all times that any attempt to enter our home will be detected and we can act. Integrating the available surveillance and detection systems guarantees the security of our home and that we will not have unpleasant surprises when we return.
